I think peace really makes sense before because of the peacemaker. As we all know the peacemaker is what made the west and it is the only preferred gun back then. But like everything else the ‘peace’ evolved then became a ‘piece’ to note that you are carrying a gun.

I think it pertains more to artillery pieces.
Firearms are small rifle and oistil, big guns are artillery pieces.
Prior to being refined small cannons and long rifles were referred to as pieces….. It stuck!
