I’ve always assumed ‘Holy Mackerel’ was associated with other slurs towards Roman Catholics (“mackerel snappers”), generally referring to their eating fish on Friday. Thoughts?
And the punch line is…
The very first paragraph of last month’s column uses the phrase “dead as a mackerel“. I kinda think you wrote something somewhere about declining memory, but I can’t remember where.
