    I believe that , in order to find the true origin of the expression “double-cross” one need look no further than the old expression “cross my heart”,as in “cross my heart and hope to die”, to indicate that the person is telling the truth. Perhaps to “cross one’s heart” twice (secretly)lets one off the hook. I remember as a child, when purposely telling a lie, the practice of holding both hands behind my back with fingers 3 and 4 of each hand crossed, apparently thus avoiding consequent death or other punishment for the lie. Just a thought

    Was awarded the Knight of the Double Cross.
    Even though it was well known that after
    Beating some Spainards out of their loot
    In Panama, he left most of his men
    Stranded on the beach so as not to
    Have to share.

    The Original “Double Cross” was the “Union Jack”. Scots felt that it was not fair to take their nation and give them subservient position to England. The second “Double Cross” was the confederate “Stars and Bars” flag. Some of the Southerners felt the promise of
    increased freedom was not honored by the Confederacy. The third “Double Cross” was the Swastika of Nazi Germany. People discovered that the Socialists were a totalitarian dictatorship and would not allow more freedom as they were promised.

    I am a Christain Arab descended for the tribe of Beni Ghassan ( the children of Gassan). At the time of the wars between the Romans and the Persians, the Ghassessenah, the tribe of Beni Ghassan were allied with the Romans as opposed to the manathera who were allied to the persians.
    When the Romans became Christian, 3rd Century, the Ghassassenas followed suit.
    The Arab conquest of the Middle East mentions a famous general, Khaled Ibn Al-Waleedwho was surrounding the city of Yarmouk, on the Yarmouk river. The Gassassenah Arabs decided to help him and would be a fifth column as they lived in the city. He said when we conquer the romans and the the city, there will be mayhem and pillaging. How will we recognize your homes. They told him that the Christian homes have a cross painted on the door. They will paint two crosses. He will then sure the houses with the double cross .here was no English language to speak of at the time, but could this be the origin of the double cross translated either from Latin or Arabic?
