    There are a few scriptures in the Bible that have this phrase. Maybe that’s the origin of it…

    Several phrases in the Bible indeed are translated as “apple of his eye” although the Hebrew does not refer to apples and instead uses the unusual form: ishon: possibly “little man” or bavat ayin that also refers to the pupil.
