    My theory is that it originated from bourdaloue, a urinary receptacle particularly used by ladies in times past.

    I too had wondered if the origin was linked to the use of the coach pot or bourdalou by ladies in the late 28th and 19th centuries, especially since “going to the loo” or “going to use the loo” are phrases associated with women.
